The Cambrian Lab for the highest quality processing

You can be assured of the highest quality processing when you entrust your work to the Cambrian Lab. With comprehensive facilities using modern equipment we provide both digital and conventional processing. Whether you are after just a few prints from your digital camera or are a professional photographer looking for the highest quality prints for your client's once in a life time wedding album, you can trust the team in the Cambrian Lab.

A comprehensive processing department provides for both film and digital processing by a team of dedicated experts. With all our processing carried out on the premises you can be assured of a professional and speedy service.

We are one of only a handful of companies that still process conventional Black & White film on the premises. Couple this with our on-site E6 slide processing and fully equipped printing department and you have everything you could need all under one roof.

Not content with the standard size prints obtainable from any high street lab, Cambrian have invested in modern equipment to produce prints up to poster size. In fact we can make prints to any size up to 24" (approx 600mm) wide by just about any length.

When you have your photographs printed to the highest quality you will need to present them at their best. To this end Cambrian Photography provide a comprehensive picture framing service. Together with a wide range of photograph albums and mounts we also have a large stock of ready made frames.

For that special photo we can even make a bespoke frame for you in our fully equipped Picture Framing workshop. We have a very wide range of mouldings to choose from, just pop in to have a look. Your photo can be framed behind plain or non-reflective glass to suit your requirements.

Photo Editing Service at Cambrian Photography

We are often called upon to edit customers photographs and have developed a range of techniques that enable us to produce just about any effect you may be looking for. Whether you just want the colour of your photo adjusting or are looking for more finely detailed work, we are able to work with you to produce the ultimate result. Many customers don't realise the scope of modern computer software when it comes to editing and manipulating photographs and are amazed at what can be achieved using this modern technology.

Copying photos come under this heading also. We don't just photocopy your precious memories, they are carefully scanned to a high resolution and retouched as necessary to produce the optimum print. Many a time has a customer remarked that the copy appears to be clearer than the original.

Cine to Video and DVD Transfer Service

Remember cine film? Have you got a box full of hidden memories in your attic gathering dust? Using modern technology it is now possible to transfer your old cine film to video tape and DVD. Imagine the surprise on peoples' faces when you present them with a modern version of your old films on your TV.

With many home video recorders now becoming obsolete, it is also time to consider transferring your valuable tape memories to modern digital media. A far more important and insidious consideration with regard to video tapes is a virulent 'tape mould' that has been slowly destroying video tape beyond repair. Many families have discovered that the tapes containing their precious memories are damaged beyond repair. (Source: Daily Telegraph 21 July 2008).

Transferring your video tapes to DVD not only stops any further degradation of the quality but also ensues the footage is available for generations to come. DVDs are also easy to make copies from to pass to friends and family members.

Ask us about our Cine to Video and DVD Transfer Service today. You'll be glad you did when tomorrow comes around.

The story

The story of Cambrian Photography is the story of its founder Dick Duncalf. He started as a photographer in Conwy in 1945. "We made a good business taking pictures of tourists by the Castle and The Smallest House" he recalls with fond memories. "Even then we used to have the prints ready in an hour!"

"There was no film or paper available in shops so we used bulk film and paper from the Air Force - 35mm from the gun cameras and 1000ft waterproof paper cut down to 9 3/8 inches (an early version of resin coated papers)."

"Because there was such a shortage of films and papers available we started to sell the ex Air Force stock in the shop. Pretty soon the tail started to wag the dog!"

We used Leica's as they were the only 35mm cameras available at the time.

After a time working in Tywyn Meirionydd, as the official photographer of the Western Command he left the Army in 1962 and returned to the shop as the photographer. By then trade had increased and the shop was at its present site in Colwyn Bay.

"I remember one morning going to the bakery that was behind the shop to buy a loaf and finding that they were selling up, when I got back to the shop I not only had a loaf but the bakery as well! That was in '63." The old bakery was then converted into the 500sq ft studio.

"I thought that it was important to lead in terms of technology, and things had changed a lot even since I started. I began my photographic career using glass plates and flash powder and by 1963 I was using electronic lights in the studio (Broncolor). I was the first in the area to have a portable electronic flash, it was called a Mega Flash and the battery bag weighed 15-16 pounds and the reflector was like a frying pan! I used a Ross studio camera with an 8.5" x 6.5" whole plate back and we had a state of the art front projection unit. Those were the days."

One aspect of Cambrian photography today that customers admire is the collection of plate cameras and antique equipment that sits on the higher shelves surrounding the shop. This is only a small part of an extensive collection that Dick collected over the years. "I started the collection because I didn't have a pension!" he jokes, "Sadly most of the cameras are boxed away as we don't have enough space to exhibit them. We had looked at opening a photographic museum at one time in Conwy but sadly that all fell through".

"One thing that I feel passionate about (apart from fishing) is the importance of continuity". Even though Mark Duncalf now runs the shop Dick still spends a few months of the year helping out. "Cambrian is a family business - everyone is involved in some way and that to me is vital in today's market where people are so often treated like herded consumers and the craft of photography is secondary to the technology".

Mark took over the business from his father in the early 80s after completing his HND in Photography at Blackpool and Fylde College. Mark is responsible for all the photography at Cambrian from injury photos to weddings to architecture. In his spare time Mark is a keen fisherman.

Beverly Duncalf is responsible for the day to day running of the office, she deals with all of the accounts and invoicing. Her main passion is her horses, she regularly competes in various horse shows throughout the year.

Cambrian Photography became a limited company in August 2003 but continues to be a family run business with the emphasis on customer service. Cambrian is a 'bricks & mortar' business in that we don't just exist in cyberspace, we have a well stocked store with knowledgeable staff keen to answer all your questions about your purchase, something not available from many 'internet businesses'. After-sales service is also something that we pride ourselves in, not only can we supply all your film and digital media but we have a full range of accessories to boot. Should your equipment suffer a malfunction we offer a full guarantee on all equipment including second hand products as well as a thorough repair service for any equipment out of guarantee.

As well as a large range of ready-made picture frames, we have a fully equipped framing workshop with a large selection of mouldings and mounts to choose from. This enables us to provide a bespoke picture framing service to whatever size you are likely to require.

A comprehensive processing department provides for both film and digital processing by a team of dedicated experts. With all our processing carried out on the premises you can be assured of a professional and speedy service.

With such a comprehensive range of services Cambrian Photography continues to go from strength to strength.

Privacy Policy Changes

This policy was created on March 2008.

WEEE Regulations

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive is now UK law. The legislation aims to make producers pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electrical equipment. The regulations also mean that suppliers of equipment like high street shops and internet retailers must allow consumers to return their waste equipment free of charge.

The amount of WEEE we throw away is increasing by around 5% each year, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.

• Much of the UK’s WEEE ends up in landfill, where the lead and other toxins it contains can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health.

• Many electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save our natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending electrical goods to landfill.

Distributors of new Electric and Electronic Equipment (EEE) have a part to play in reducing the amount of WEEE going into landfill sites.

Cambrian Photography Ltd is obliged under these regulations to offer our customers free take-back of their WEEE on a like-for-like basis when they buy a new Electrical or Electronic product from us.

For example, if a customer bought a new camera from us we would accept their old camera and prevent it going into a landfill site by disposing of it safely. Customers must return their WEEE item to us within 28 days of purchasing their new item.

Under the WEEE Regulations, all new electrical goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Goods are marked with this symbol to show that they were produced after 13th August 2005, and should be disposed of separately from normal household waste so that they can be recycled.
